Madeleine Pickens Is Buying a Million Acres to Create a Wild Horse Sanctuary

Madeleine Pickens, wife of Texas oilman (and OSU benefactor) T. Boone Pickens, has begun negotiations to purchase one million acres of land in order to create a sanctuary for wild horses currently being held in holding pens by the BLM (the Bureau of Land Management).

According to a recent ABC News article, 33,000 horses are currently being maintained at a cost of $1,500 a year per head by the U.S. government.

It will be another year before the mustang preserve is ready, and so the Bush administration is seeking $20 million in the interim to protect the horses until the ranch is ready.

God bless you, Madeleine Pickens!  Horse lovers everywhere are grateful.

Do You Know of a Southeast Michigan Animal Shelter In Need of Heated Dog Beds?

Do You Know of a Southeast Michigan Animal Shelter In Need of Heated Dog Beds?

A member of one of my LinkedIn groups has 25 heated doggie beds which she is willing to donate to an animal shelter in Southeast Michigan.  They are K and H brand.  They are returns and so they cannot be resold.

She does not want to ship them anywhere.

Please pass the word around that they are available if someone wants to pick them up and put them to good use.

Please contact me and I will pass the word along.

Finding Dead Crows or Blue Jays on Your Farm or Ranch? Your Horses May Have West Nile Virus

I have heard that crows and blue jays are very susceptible to West Nile Virus, a disease that is deadly for horses if they are bitten by infected mosquitoes.  So if you find dead blue jays or crows, you may want to eradicate mosquitoes in your environment through proper management techniques.

You also should make sure that your horses are regularly vaccinated against WNV.

Is There Uranium in Your Granite Countertop? -- Perhaps A Radon Test Is Appropriate

An out-of-town buyer asked me the other day if we had to worry about radon in our area.  I told him, "No, it's typically not something we worry about here."

We have very few basements in Oklahoma and radon just isn't something we have to worry about...  or should we?

A friend sent me a link to an article from The New York Times called, "What's Lurking in Your Countertop?"  After reading this article I think I need to rethink my response when someone asks about radon.

I know I have seen gold specks in granite.  It only makes sense that uranium could be present in some slices of granite.

Granite is an igneous rock formed under heat and pressure.  Generally it will have heavier materials like copper and zinc.  A typical ton of granite is a composite of materials and can include iron, uranium, platinum, gold, silver, and lead.  Other rocks in granite are generally melted down into their constuent materials.

Uranium releases radon gas as it decays.  Therefore, it makes sense that if there is a little bit of uranium in your granite countertop, then there could be some emissions of radon gas in your home.

Perhaps when recommending home inspections, I should recommend radon tests for homes with granite countertops, even though the local geology typically would not lead one to believe that radon gas is a problem

Righteous Outrage, Totalitarianism, Censorship, The Bail Out Plan, and Possible Mortgage Fraud -- the Children of Light and the Children of Darkness

The threat of totalitarianism is my topic.  I listen to talk radio in little snippets while I am driving and so I hear little bits and then think.  This past evening I heard little snippets that caused me to want to rant, ramble, and rave.  Please read the entire blog and then comment and tell me what you think and know.

I have a Masters in Divinity.  I remember clearly the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran minister who died in a concentration camp just days before Allied troops freed Germany at the end of World War II.  It was on that day during a memorial service at Perkins Chapel in Dallas that I was introduced to one of the great theologians of the twentieth century and to one of the great mysteries of our time.  How could such a holy and devout man of God participate in a plot to kill Hitler?  What was he thinking?  I have read half of his books since then and I still cannot answer that question.  What compelled him to defy everything he stood for to try to stop what was happening in Germany?

You see, moral outrage was required in Germany during the early 1930's, but the trains were running on time.  The pulpits were silent then -- as they are in America today.

Today everybody was talking about Hilmar Von Campe, an ex-Hitler Youth member and author of "Defeating the Totalitarian Lie: A Former Hitler Youth Warns America.".  In this book Von Campe is urging Americans not to repeat history by ignoring what happened in Nazi Gerrmany during the 1930's.  A summary of his comments can be found in an article that was published today:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=80644

One of the greatest theologians of the Cold War was Reinhold Niebuhr.  Everyone knows him -- they just don't know it.  He is the author of the Serenity Prayer which appears on plaques and is said daily at AA meetings without his getting any credit.  The original prayer is actually much longer.

Reinhold Niebuhr wrote a book called The Nature and Destiny of Man, in which he discusses human nature and develops his thesis about the nature of sin.  Essentially his thesis was that women tend to err by placing too much emphasis on relationships, while men tend to err by emphasizing what they know and do.  The former he refers to as the "sin of lust" and the latter he refers to as the "sin of pride."  In developing this thesis on the sin of pride, Niebuhr relies on themes that he developed in his earlier works, one in particular being The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness.  To deny that people err in either of these directions is to be unaware of human nature.  The existence of evil in this world is real and must be recognized and confronted.

When Michael Savage was ranting and raving about the demise of Bear Stearns last February, he was like the canary in the coal mine.  I did not hear anyone else complain about how Wall Street had thrown one of their own to the wolves and then profitted from the process.  Everyone was oblivious.  Then Wall Street went down the tubes and their whining was heard around the world.  Enter the bailout plan and the point of this blog.

On Mondays and Thursday nights I set the clock and then take a nap.  I have midnight appointments with Jesus at the Chapel of Peace at St. John's Hospital here in Tulsa, where I participate in a 24-7-365 adoration program.  (I am now a Roman Catholic.)  I had trouble waking up tonight and was running really late, but I had the luxury of knowing that someone else was also on the schedule for the first hour.  So I happened to hear snippets of a talk show that I had never heard before.

I therefore cannot tell you the source of my anxiety.  All I can say was that the show was on at 12:30 am on Friday, November 14, 2008 on KRMG radio in Tulsa.

The essence of what he was saying was that another talk show host in (I believe) New Haven, Connecticut had interviewed Senator Chris Dodd on the morning of October 29, 2008.  The interview never aired.  The talk show host who did the interview was fired that afternoon.  Why was he fired?  Why was the interview never aired?  Was this censorship or coincidence?  Was it politically expedient?  Are we in need of fighting the Fairness Doctrine or should we be calling it the Censorship Doctrine?  These are questions that must be answered.

The aforementioned interview has now been leaked and portions of the interview were playing on my radio as I sat mesmerized in the hospital parking garage, thinking about Reinhold Niebuhr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Hilmar Von Campe, and what they would have to say about Chris Dodd and other leaders of our Congress.

Chris Dodd is the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.  He authored the infamous bailout plan.

Some of the questions raised during the interview, which I frantically scribbled on an envelope from my purse were:  Did Chris Dodd commit mortgage fraud?  What was his relationship to Countrywide?  Was he benefitting from his relationship with a company whom he was supposed to be regulating?

The interviewer posed many questions about the bailout plan.  It sounded to me like there is a lot in it that the American people would be shocked to know.  Mr. Dodd sounded very arrogant.

Has anyone else out there in Active Rain land heard this interview?  Does this censorship concern you?  Does the threat of totalitarianism frighten you?

[Forgive me, friends, if my biases have shown too heavily tonight.  I am proud to live in Oklahoma, a "red" state which happens to be the only one where every county voted "red" during the last presidential election.  Nobody can say we didn't try.... ]

Boman Acres and Magnolia Terrace Neighbors Meet the Storage Station to Discuss PUD-767 and Rezoning from RS-3 to OL/PUD

Bowman Acres IV and Magnolia Terrace neighbors affected by the rezoning of a triangle of land located to the south of 31st Street just west of Interstate 44 in Tulsa, Oklahoma met with the proposed developers of the land last night to express their concerns and to discuss the land use and rezoning issues involved in the placement of a storage unit facility on the property.

The discussion was both cordial and productive.  The meeting began at 6 pm with a sign-in and introductions.

The owners of  the Storage Station, Gary Harkreader and Kevin Coutant, began by showing us the pictures of their other in-fill projects in Midtown at 2915 E. 5 1st, in Brookside at 4530 S. Peoria, and at 4411 S. Sheridan (across from the Sam's Club).

They then showed us the zoning map of the area and their proposal for the development of the land.  The project is to be developed in phases with storage units to be built on either side of the big flood control drainage ditch with a bridge between the two parcels.  The entrance to the facility will be located at a point just west of the current on-ramp to westbound I-44 and the Broken Arrow Expressway.

The homeowners were pleased to the receptivity of the developers to our concerns and questions.  It appears that the storage facility will be implemented in a tasteful and relatively unobtrusive way in order to fit into the neighborhood in a way that will not appear to be an eyesore.

The developers invited us to participate in the landscape planning of the border between their project and 31st Street.

Anyone interested in hearing more about the project prior to it's consideration by the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (TMAPC) can call Chris at INCOG at 918-584-7526 or visit him at INCOG on the 6th Floor, Suite 600, 201 West 5th Street, Tulsa, OK  74103.  When calling, please refer to Case number Z-7118/PUD-767.

A public hearing will be held before the Tulsa Meropolitan Area Planning Commission  (TMAPC) in the Tulsa City council Chambers, One Technology Center, 175 East 2nd Street, Second Level, Tulsa, OK at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 to consider the proposed amendment to the zoning and for the proposed Planned Unite Development.

Gary Harkreader can be reached by calling him at his office at 918-745-9702.  Kevin Coutant can be reached by calling him at his office at 918-591-5221.
